A woman can never get enough of jewellery. And how can she? With the immense variety, style and colours, obsession is only natural. Jewellery can be crafted out of many substances; metal or precious stones. It can embellish any part of the body from diamond rings, hairpins and toe rings to regal tiaras, earrings, pendants, bracelets and much more.

Jewellery is subjective to moods and occasions; sometimes it is just to stand out from the rest! Here are the different metals and stones used to make jewellery.

Diamond

The most sort after stone of them all. Is there anything more beautiful than a diamond? Formed from carbon, diamonds are the most popular gemstone and are judged by the four C's: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. The great things about diamonds are that they can be set in any metal and compliment other stones with ease. A good grade of diamonds is blessed with longevity. And there is no better gift to a woman than a diamond ring, especially if you are saving it for the D-day, then a diamond engagement ring would spell bound a lady with your charm. A diamond is the epitome of style and grandeur.

Ruby

When aluminium oxide combines with chromium, it gives birth to a beautiful red stone known as a ruby. The colour of a ruby varies from pink to blood red. The darker the ruby, the more valuable the stone. It may not be as durable as a diamond, but can be set in any metal. The true beauty of a ruby is in its imperfections. The natural impurities and lines running across the centre actually add to value of this precious stone. It is the second hardest precious stone. It is believed that the ruby is lucky for those born in July.

Emerald

This royal stone is formed when mineral beryl is amalgamated with vanadium or chromium in the earth. At the very depth of an emerald are its many incisions that, like the ruby, add value to it. The emerald has a reflective capability or 'inner light', known as its fire. It is this fire that adds the warmth to this gem. The emerald has colour variations ranging from greenish blue to deeper greens. Darker green emeralds are of more value.

Sapphire

Made from the same elements as a ruby, a sapphire is another beautiful precious stone, the most popular being the blue sapphire. What gives the sapphire its unique hue is the varying proportions of chromium. A sapphire can also be colourless and also appears in opaque shades of black and grey. A sapphire is extremely hard and durable and has many applications other than jewellery, namely in infrared optical parts, high durability windows and in semiconductors. Purple, green, yellow, orange and even brown are the other colours in which a sapphire can be found.

Metal used to create jewellery

Gold

Thanks to its yellowish glow and malleable qualities, gold is the most popular metal to set jewellery in. You can find gold in alluvial soil, biscuits, coins or in granular rocks. Gold does not react with most chemicals, air and water and does not rust. Because of its ductility, gold jewellery designs are most defined and intricate. Nitric acid is used to affirm the presence of gold in particular items.

There are different types of gold pertaining to different alloys and gold coatings.

Gold coatings include rolled gold and gold plating, and gold alloys include 24 karat, 18 karat, 14 karat and 10 karat, 24 karat being the purest with no additions. The colour of the gold changes depending on the other metals used in the alloy. 'White gold' is alloyed with nickel or palladium. The pinkish or reddish 'Black Hills' gold is alloyed with copper.
